We all live in a watershed, but why is it important?
A watershed is an area of land that drains rain water or snow into a single location such as a river or lake. These water bodies supply drinking water , water for agriculture, manufacturing, and gives us opportunities for recreation such as kayaking, canoeing, and fishing. They also supply an abundance of natural habitat.
The leading causes of impaired waterways are sediment and bacteria (E. coli), which many of our streams and rivers in our area are impaired with. As well as excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus).
So what can you do to help?
Conserve water every single day - shorter showers, fixing leaks
Do not over apply fertilizers
Recycle yard waste in a compost
Pick up after your pets
Never pour pollutants down a storm drain
